S: Good afternoon. I'm Smith, John Smith of the British Overseas Trading Co., London. I came to the Fair two weeks ago and have since corporations. I want to make use of my present visit to settle our claim on you for the 100 tons of Bleached Cotton Waste, as per Sales Confirmation No. 1250E.
L: I see. I've heard that you have lodged a claim against us. A good thing that you've come to the Fair. I'm sure we can clear up this matter through personal discussion.

S: I hope so. We're very sorry to have cause to complain about the quality of the cotton waste you shipped to us by s/s "Mette Skou". We have written you save letters on this subject. No doubt you have received from our London office the outturn samples of the inferior quality cotton waste as well as well as our letters giving full details of this claim.
L: I'm told that your last letter and the outturn samples reached us only a few days ago. We have already made a careful investigation of the case.

S: Good. With all the facts before you, I feel sure claim for the inferior quality at 3 pence per Ib is justified, as the colour of the shipment is much harder than that of your previous consignment, and is, in fact, similar to your lower grade, Type, No. 35.As for the quantity in your future shipments to us. I think this simplifies matters.
L: We've given your claim our careful consideration but regret our inability to accommodate it. First of all, we have to point out that we always sell our bleached cotton waste on the basis of Certificates of Quality Inspection Bureau, which are to be accepted by both parties as final and binding. We made our terms clear to you at the time of booking and you accepted these terms. The 100tons bleached cotton waste, Type No. 33shipped to you per s/s "Mette Skou"was, according to our usual practice, carefully inspected and weighed before leaving our mill and was again checked and weighed by the SCIB prior to shipment. Had there been a shortage of weight and a discrepancy between this of cotton waste and our sales sample - based on that quality we concluded the order with you - the Certificates of Quality and Weight would not have been issued by the Bureau.

S: I think you're right. But if you compare the outturn sample of the present parcel with that of your previ9ous supplies - a sample of which I've brought with me - you will readily see a marked difference in colour. The darker colour of your "Mette Skou"shipment is undoubtedly due to poor bleaching.
L: We agree with you that the colour of the lot under complaint is a bit darker than that of our previous shipments, but you must know that we sell our cotton Waste according to our sales sample. This is to be taken as the standard, and not the quality of any previous supplies. It happens sometimes that our shipments turn out to be of better quality than our sales samples, but such discrepancies are in no way to be considered a criterion for our future supplies. In other words, our quality is based solely on our sales sample. We've got here our sales samples Type 33 and Type 35. You can see for yourself the difference between these grades, and that the quality we shipped to yu per s/s "Mette Skou"is similar to our sales sample Type 33.
史：你說(shuō)的也對(duì)。但是你如果把這批貨的抽樣同上一批貨比較一下（我把上批貨的抽樣帶來(lái)了）就容易看出顏色明顯不同。你們這批由"麥脫司谷"輪裝運(yùn)的貨，顏色比較灰暗，肯定是由于漂白不良所造成的。

S: I see. You explanation is clear enough. Since the slight difference in colour will hardly, affect our use, we may consider withdrawing the claim. But what about the short weight?
L: As we have just mentioned, we sell our goods on shipping weight and not landed weight, and the Certificate of weight issued by the SCIB confirms that we delivered full shipping weight. The reason for the short-weight you complain of must lie elsewhere. It is probable that the shortage is due to evaporation during transit through hot climates. Such loss in weight is not unusual. Furthermore, the shortage reported by you is only 200lbs, which we think is rather negligible, inasmuch as it represents less than 1% of the whole shipment. White we regret to have caused you some inconvenience with this shipment; we are not in a position to entertain your claim, due to the reasons we have just given you.
